Wilks was the standard way to compare powerlifting totals across bodyweights for over two decades. Federations have moved on, but people still search for it.

How Wilks works

A fifth-order polynomial of bodyweight produces a coefficient, and your total is multiplied by it:

Wilks = total × 500 ÷ (a + b·bw + c·bw² + d·bw³ + e·bw⁴ + f·bw⁵)

The coefficients differ by sex and were fitted to world-record data from the early 1990s. That is both the strength and the weakness — it reflected the sport as it was then.

Why federations moved away from it

  • The record data aged. Coefficients fitted in 1994 no longer reflected the distribution of performances thirty years later.
  • Distortion at the extremes. Very light and very heavy lifters were scored inconsistently relative to the middle of the field.
  • A revision existed and did not catch on. Wilks 2 was published in 2020; most of the sport went to DOTS or IPF GL instead.

If you are comparing yourself to historical results or an old leaderboard, Wilks is the right tool. For anything current, use DOTS or IPF GL points.

Common questions

What is a good Wilks score?

Roughly: 200–300 novice, 300–400 intermediate, 400–500 advanced, 500+ elite. The same broad bands as DOTS, since the scales were aligned.

Is Wilks still used?

Rarely in competition. The IPF uses GL points and much of the rest of the sport uses DOTS. Wilks persists in casual comparison and older records.

What is the difference between Wilks and Wilks 2?

Wilks 2 (2020) refitted the coefficients to newer data. It saw limited adoption.

Does Wilks work for a single lift?

It was fitted to three-lift totals. Single-lift Wilks scores are common informally and not directly comparable.
