Frequency recommendations assume you can recover between sessions. Sleep, food and life stress all reduce how much frequency is useful.
Why frequency matters less than volume, but still matters
Meta-analytic work comparing training frequencies found that when weekly volume is equated, higher frequency produces similar or slightly better results. So frequency is largely a tool for distributing volume rather than an independent variable.
The practical case for spreading it: muscle protein synthesis stays elevated for roughly 24 to 48 hours after training a muscle, so training it every 48 hours keeps the signal running more of the time. And ten sets done well beats twenty sets done tired.
Splits that work at each frequency
- 2× per muscle: upper/lower four days a week, or full body three times. The best-supported default.
- 3× per muscle: full body three or six days, or push/pull/legs run twice.
- 1× per muscle: a classic body-part split. Workable, and generally inferior for the same weekly volume.
- 4×+ per muscle: only sensible at high total volume and with good recovery.
Also leave roughly 48 hours before training the same muscle hard again — that constraint, not the split name, is what actually matters.
Common questions
How often should I train each muscle?
Twice a week suits most people. It distributes volume well and fits common schedules.
Is once a week enough?
It can work, particularly at lower volumes, but the same sets spread over two sessions generally produce at least as much.
Can I train a muscle every day?
Only at low volume per session. Most people accumulate fatigue faster than they adapt.
Does frequency matter more for strength or size?
More for strength, where practising the movement is part of the adaptation.
