Common pace reference points
- 6:00 /km — 10 km in 1:00:00, half marathon in 2:06.
- 5:00 /km — 10 km in 50:00, half in 1:45, marathon in 3:31.
- 4:30 /km — 10 km in 45:00, half in 1:35, marathon in 3:10.
- 4:00 /km — 10 km in 40:00, half in 1:24, marathon in 2:49.
- 3:00 /km — 10 km in 30:00. Close to elite for most amateurs.
A 4-hour marathon is 5:41 /km. A sub-2-hour half is 5:41 /km as well, which is a useful coincidence to remember.
Even pacing versus how races actually go
The split table assumes constant pace. In practice:
- Slightly negative splits — second half faster than the first — is the pacing strategy associated with best performances at most distances.
- Going out too fast is the commonest error, particularly in a first marathon. The time lost in the second half exceeds the time gained in the first.
- Terrain and wind mean constant pace is often the wrong target anyway; constant effort is better.
Common questions
What is a good 5 km pace?
Highly individual. 6:00/km is a solid recreational pace, 5:00/km is fit, and 4:00/km is competitive club level.
How do I convert pace per km to per mile?
Multiply by 1.609. The calculator does both.
Should I run even splits?
Even or slightly negative splits produce the best results. Starting fast rarely pays.
What pace for a 4-hour marathon?
5:41 per km, or 9:09 per mile.
