Strength Standards Calculator

Standards give you a target rather than a verdict. The useful output is the last row: how much more weight takes you to the next band.

What the bands mean

  • Beginner — what an untrained but healthy adult can manage after learning the movement.
  • Novice — a few months of consistent training.
  • Intermediate — one to two years of consistent, progressive training. Most committed recreational lifters end up here, and it is a genuinely good place to be.
  • Advanced — several years of focused training. Competitive at local level.
  • Elite — competitive at national level and beyond. A small fraction of lifters reach this, and not everybody can.

Progressing from intermediate to advanced typically takes years, not months — see how long until you see results.

How to use standards without being discouraged by them

Standards are most useful as a source of targets and least useful as a judgement. Two things worth holding on to:

  • The next band is the only one that matters. The figure above showing how much weight takes you to it is more actionable than the whole table.
  • Your own trend beats any standard. Adding 20 kg to your squat over a year is progress regardless of which band it falls in — see tracking strength progress over months.

Also note these are open-age, drug-free-population estimates from lifting databases, where the sample skews toward people motivated enough to log their lifts. Treat them as approximate.

Common questions

How long to reach intermediate?

Typically one to two years of consistent, progressive training.

Are these standards for a single rep?

Yes, they are 1RM figures. Use the 1RM calculator to estimate yours from a working set.

Why do standards differ between websites?

Different source databases and different band definitions. There is no official set.

Do they account for age?

No. These are open-age estimates; expect lower figures at both ends of the age range.

Track the numbers, not just calculate them

MyFitsy stores your weight, measurements and every session, so the figures above become a trend instead of a one-off.
