Sinclair Calculator

The Sinclair coefficient converts a weightlifting total into what that lifter would theoretically total at the heaviest bodyweight in the world-record data.

How the Sinclair coefficient works

Unlike Wilks and DOTS, Sinclair produces a result in kilograms — it answers "what would this lifter total if they were as heavy as the world-record holder's bodyweight?"

Coefficient = 10^(A · (log₁₀(bodyweight ÷ b))²)

where b is the bodyweight of the world-record holder in the heaviest class and A is fitted from record data. If your bodyweight equals or exceeds b, the coefficient is 1.0 and your Sinclair total equals your actual total.

This calculator uses the IWF's published coefficients: A = 0.722762521 with b = 193.609 kg for men, and A = 0.787004341 with b = 153.757 kg for women.

What it is used for

  • Best-lifter awards at weightlifting meets, where lifters from different bodyweight classes need ranking.
  • Comparing your own progress if your bodyweight has changed.
  • Historical comparison within a coefficient cycle.

There are variants: the Sinclair-Malone-Meltzer coefficient adds an age factor for masters competition, and Sinclair-Wilks-style hybrids exist informally. This calculator uses the standard open-age Sinclair.

Common questions

What is a good Sinclair total?

Roughly: 250+ is a competent club lifter, 350+ is strong national level, and 400+ approaches international standard for men. Women's bands sit lower in absolute kg.

Why is my coefficient 1.0?

Your bodyweight is at or above the reference weight, so no adjustment is applied.

Is Sinclair used for powerlifting?

No — Sinclair is for Olympic weightlifting. Powerlifting uses DOTS or IPF GL points.

Do the coefficients change?

Yes, the IWF recalibrates each Olympic cycle. Scores are only comparable within a cycle.
