Rest between sets exists to protect performance on the next set. Longer rest generally produces more growth, because it produces more quality reps.

Why longer rest is usually better
The intuition that short rest is more productive because it feels harder is wrong. A study comparing three-minute and one-minute rest periods in trained men, with volume otherwise matched, found greater strength and hypertrophy with the longer rest — because the longer rest allowed more reps at a higher load across the whole set.
Short rest maximises the pump and the discomfort. Neither is the adaptation you are training for.
When to shorten it anyway
- Isolation work. A cable curl creates far less systemic fatigue than a squat, so 60–90 seconds costs little.
- Antagonist supersets. Pair a row with a leg curl and each muscle still gets full rest while the other works — a genuine time saving at no cost.
- Genuine time pressure. But cut exercises before cutting rest on compounds. Keeping every exercise and halving every rest is the classic mistake: the same set count on paper, considerably less load in reality.
Common questions
How long should I rest between sets?
3–5 minutes on heavy compound work, 2–3 minutes on compound hypertrophy work, 60–120 seconds on isolation.
Does short rest burn more fat?
Marginally more calories per minute, at the cost of the lifting that preserves muscle. Manage fat loss through diet instead.
Should I time my rests?
Useful at least occasionally — people consistently rest less than they think.
Is resting too long a problem?
Beyond about five minutes you gain little, and the session gets long. Not harmful.
