Measurement Progress Calculator
The combination is what tells you something. Waist down with limbs holding is fat loss with muscle retention — a conclusion the scale cannot reach.
Your results
Measure consistently: morning, before eating, tape snug but not compressing, standing relaxed. Consistency of technique matters more than which landmark you choose. Leave sites at zero to skip them.
Reading the combination, not the sites
Individual measurements mean little. The combination means a lot:
- Waist down, limbs stable — fat loss with muscle retention. The ideal outcome of a cut.
- Waist down, limbs up — recomposition. Uncommon and excellent, most likely early in training or returning from a layoff.
- Waist stable, limbs up — muscle gain with minimal fat gain. The ideal outcome of a lean bulk.
- Waist up, limbs up — gaining both. Fine early in a surplus; reduce it if the waist is moving faster than the limbs.
- Waist up, limbs stable — fat gain without muscle gain. Either the surplus is too large or the training is not progressing.
- Everything down — losing too fast, or losing muscle. Check your lifts.
Four of those six are invisible on the scale, and two of them look identical on it.
Making the numbers comparable
Measurement error is the enemy of every conclusion here, and landmark placement is the largest source of it. Measuring a bicep 2 cm higher gives a different number.
- Record the distance from a bony landmark. "18 cm below the shoulder tip" rather than "mid-bicep". Bone does not move; soft tissue does.
- Morning, before eating, before training. Post-session pump inflates limb readings by up to 1 cm.
- Muscles relaxed, not flexed. Flexed measurements are far more variable.
- Two readings averaged, and a third if they differ by more than 1 cm.
- Same person measuring. Between-tester variation exceeds within-tester.
Chest is the least reliable site — breathing, posture and shoulder position all affect it. If your chest numbers look erratic, that is why.
Common questions
How often should I measure?
Every two weeks. Weekly is mostly noise on circumferences.
Which measurement matters most?
Waist. If you take only one, take that.
Why did my chest measurement jump around?
Breathing, posture and arm position all change it. It is the least reliable site.
Should I measure flexed or relaxed?
Relaxed, always, and consistently.
